Paint correction removes clear coat down to the depth of the scratch. That is the whole reason we are careful with it: factory clear coat is baked onto the body at temperatures no body shop can reproduce, before any of the trim that would melt is installed. Once it is gone, nobody can put it back.
So we measure. Paint depth readings before we polish tell us how much clear coat there is to work with, and we monitor how much is coming off as we go. If a scratch cannot be removed safely, we stop and tell you — a thin spot in the clear will fail out in the Carolina sun, and that is a worse outcome than the scratch.
